‘Lucinda Discovers her Green thumb’ mixed media on paper, 2018

Color sets the stage for the emotions, mood and vibes in a painting.  In this case, Lucinda is a character who would have a strong personality. A complex combination of boldness, loud, joyful, confident, playful and overall benevolent young adult.

Miniature Painting

I took time to make something with my hands and some gouache paint today. It is always a grounding experience to push color around with a tiny paintbrush. This image has been in my head for a while. I tend to wait to start a piece until I have figured out what the most effective medium is to tell the story, and I don’t always know where the story may end up. The way I see it though is that the most important part is just to start.

Little Vita

I’ve been drawing little Vita for many years now. She sort of sprouted out of my blank piece of paper one day and stole my heart. I’d like to to keep learning more about this spunky little lady.

Tappy the Mustard Toad 3.0

Mustard toads like playing games too…they just don’t know you’re not supposed to eat the equipment.

I’ve been teaching myself how to animate using 2D tools. Here’s a little short.

Last year my focus of improvement was in gesture drawing and conveying more movement and action in my figures. I had to become more comfortable with working more loosely and treat each mark as an opportunity for learning rather than a precious object that may be ruined.

Freehand drawing used to intimidate me and I viewed it as a skill I did not possess. After a year of doing it with permanent markers without the option to erase or undo I’m feeling more comfortable with diving into a fresh sheet of paper. The worst that can happen is that I just have to start all over again.

Improving with each new start.
